BBC Sport understands the 25-year-old England international is close to a £17m switch to Old Trafford.
He has been at Villa Park for four-and-a-half years after joining from Watford but has only one year left on his contract.
Young - who scored in England's recent 2-2 draw with Switzerland - has made 15 appearances for his country.
New Villa manager Alex McLeish admitted earlier this week Young was destined to depart this summer.
"It's not confirmed yet but it does seem likely," the Scot told talkSPORT.
"In my humble opinion it will be very difficult to keep hold of him."
Young cost Villa £9.65m in January 2007 and has scored 30 Premier League goals for the club.
United striker Michael Owen said on twitter: "I see Ashley Young has undergone a medical. Let's hope everything goes well as he would be a great signing for us."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson lost long-serving midfielder Paul Scholes to retirement earlier this month and has already signed Blackburn youngster Phil Jones.
A new goalkeeper also remains on his shopping list to replace Edwin van der Sar as the Premier League champions prepare for next season.
